Michael Loewenstein is a scenic designer and artist, who was born in 1933 in Chicago, Illinois and currently lives in Evanston, Illinois.
He graduated from the University of Colorado and attended the Art Students League in NYC. His early career was in the Theatre as a Technician and Scenic Assistant. He worked in Summer and Winter Stock, as well as Off Broadway.
Following a two year stint in the U.S. Army, he joined the PBS outlet in Chicago where we worked as Chief Scenic Designer for the next 41 years. He was privileged to design many PBS shows including Sneak Previews with Siskel and Ebert, Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Soundstage, and many other local and network PBS programs. He is the recipient of six Regional Emmys, a Peabody, and a National Emmy Nomination. A body of his work is part of the permanent collection of the Chicago History Museum.
Following his career at PBS Chicago, he devoted himself to the design firm of M and M Production Design. This period also marks the beginning of his efforts as a fine artist, painting in oil and watercolor. As a fine artist, his interest is in content as opposed to technique, with a particular interest in light and perspective.
